Press release (German).

Rubén Martín de Lucas

Through simple gestures in the landscape, which are the appropriation of a 100 m2 area, drawing a border by following geometric forms around it and inhabiting it for a day, the Spanish artist Rubén Martín de Lucas creates a series of absurd micro-nations that invite us to reflect on the nature of every frontier and the very concept of nation. His projects are documented with photographs and videos which are shown for the first time in Germany at Galerie Boisserée.

The results of these actions are "ephemeral microstates" such a circle of plaster in a fallow land, a triangle delimited by wood slats that float on a huge reservoir inhabited with the help of a life raft, a square in a parking lot delimited with traffic cones, and others. Republics whose limit always responds to an artificial criterion that is geometry, whose duration never exceeds 24 hours and whose only inhabitant is the artist himself. These are ridiculous and absurd states, whose documentation in the form of aerial photographs, becomes a set of works as simple in the aesthetic as deep in their meaning. Poetic and visually effective gestures whose simplicity and irony invite us to reflect on the artificial and ephemeral nature of every frontier.

This series belongs to STUPID BORDERS, a set of conceptual projects that questions the idea of "nation" and points at the strange feeling of possession that man exerts towards the Earth, an entity which transcends us in age.

Alex Katz
"TIMELESS"
Selected prints, works on paper and cutouts

For the first time, Galerie Boisserée is presenting a solo exhibition with works by the US-American artist Alex Katz.

With his paintings, drawings and prints, as well as his sculptures in the form of cut-outs, Katz has been influencing the art of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries since more than sixty-five years. His style of ‘cool painting‘ was ground-breaking for American Pop Art and continues to inspire subsequent generations of artists to this day.

Works by the artist, who was born in New York in 1927, are included in museum collections worldwide and have been shown in recent years at, among others, the Albertina in Vienna, the Tate Modern in London, the Guggenheim in Bilbao, the Museum Brandhorst in Munich and the Musée de l‘Orangerie in Paris. A further retrospective will be presented this year at the Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza in Madrid. On display at Galerie Boisserée are prints, drawings and cut-outs spanning more than twenty years.

With his portraits, Katz strives to portray an immediate present, a moment, similar to a photograph. Conscious of the medial over-presence of corporeality, Katz lets the large-scale portraits come very close to the viewer. In doing so, these personalities in no way expose themselves and maintain a cool distance.

With images of flowers and reflections of light on water, the current exhibition presents various motifs from Katz‘s landscape painting, which define his oeuvre as much as the portrait.

With his prints, Katz potentiates the radiance and depth of colour space of his paintings. In the early 1960s, he began delving into various printing techniques, realising his motifs in silkscreen prints, lithographs and etchings, as well as in linocuts and woodcuts. In the process of creating a print, Katz, together with his printing workshops, constantly develops the various techniques further. The increased colour intensity and pictorial precision is immediately perceived by the viewer.

The exhibition is accompanied by a cataloque, available for Euro 10.00 incl. domestic shipping.

"For the first thirty years of my career I was saying paradox is the thing, I was pushing a paradoxical kind of art, with contradictory images like the ouroboros and the solid rainbow, but when I started making a paradoxical and contradictory perspective, a reverse perspective, then I was no longer telling my viewers things but allowing them to experience contradictory perceptions and so letting the art watcher find out the magic for themselves."
Patrick Hughes

PATRICK HUGHES
"Geometry in Motion"
Paintings and Multiples by Patrick Hughes

Tom Hammick
– "The Dark Woods of England - Explorations of Love and Loss" and other prints
